Field work place: Retirement residential
My first impressions: In the begging, I was nervous. My biggest worry was whether I could truly communicate with the residents. Even in Japan, I didn’t have experience communicate with seniors very much. Also, I thought communication could be difficult because some people had hearing loss or unclear pronunciation.
Learning on the job: Through the field work, I learned importance of smile. Basically, language is the most important tool during talking. I though too. But, through the firld work I noticed importance of smile. If I can’t understand what they said, I could communicate with smile. Also I learned true role of volunteer from same experience.
A fun activity with clients: Dance with residents. Once a week I danced with residents. Local musican came and played fun music. I have never danced with someone, so it was very precious and fun memory for me.
